Writing Can Make a Difference

For years, friends have urged me to write a book about my life adventures — especially the chapter that includes helping more than twenty young people. The stories range from wild to tragic to deeply rewarding. Maybe that full memoir will come someday, but books about decades of living take time.

Meanwhile, a wise friend, Carsie Mitchell, offered a sharper idea: collect my “Letters to the Editor” into a single, practical booklet —something that might nudge others to pick up a pen (or keyboard) and speak up. That felt both doable and useful.

I believe in speaking truth to power — telling employers, homeowners associations, and elected officials, or whoever, what needs to be said, whether or not they’re eager to hear it. Some friends call me a “Determined Rabble-Rouser.”  I’ll take it — most of my former bosses, politicians, and a few neighbors would probably agree. If this booklet does anything, I hope it proves that clear, civil writing can move a conversation, shape a decision, and sometimes, change a life.
