Phil, In a Nutshell
Except 72+ years do not fit into a nutshell!
Grateful for a wonderful life, and for parents who raised me with love and always cheered me on.
Mom and Dad would be going …
“What the #@$% … Phil is an author on Amazon?”
Life is full of surprises … Enjoy the adventure.
How it began
My younger friends are always asking, “How do you write like that?” They save my letters and postcards, but here’s the truth: I didn’t start out loving writing. In high school, English was my least favorite class — I lived for science, math, and a little history. My teachers were solid on grammar, but the assignments — read this, write about that — never sparked anything.
Everything changed at Bakersfield Junior College. I needed English credits to transfer to UC Davis and picked Creative Writing (it sounded better than “Intro to Shakespeare”). There were only about eight of us, which meant real attention. We wrote about subjects we actually cared about. My instructor pushed me to think clearly, make a case, and craft something worth reading—and she couldn’t wait to see what I’d hand in next. That enthusiasm lit the fuse.
Science and math were still my main passions, but I began to look forward to creative writing—honestly, more than to my organic chemistry lab (and I liked that lab). The lesson I carry with me—and pass on— is simple: the right teacher and the freedom to follow your curiosity can turn writing from a chore into a craft.

Personal Life
Phil Winter is a retired graphic designer with a lifelong love of storytelling, a knack for mischief, and a heart bigger than a Viking longship. Raised in Central California, Phil has lived all over the western U.S. — from the snowy peaks of Montana and Colorado to the sun-kissed beaches of Maui. These days, he calls Henderson, Nevada home (just outside of Las Vegas, where the heat makes writing indoors feel like a life mission).
A self-confessed political nerd, Phil has had dozens of letters to the editor published in newspapers big and small — from The San Diego Union-Tribune, The Las Vegas Review-Journal, Honolulu Star-Advertiser, and The Maui News to The Wall Street Journal. His commentary often sparks replies from elected officials — and eye-rolls, giggles, or text messages from friends who know he’s always got something to say.
Phil’s greatest passion? Helping kids who face challenges. He’s been a Big Brother, a foster parent, and an adoptive parent. Today, he volunteers with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southern Nevada — because once you’ve helped one kid feel seen, you just keep going.
When he’s not mentoring, Phil’s writing. His first storybook, The Chang Brothers and the Mystery at La Perouse Bay, was inspired by two Maui neighbor boys who are real-life adventurers — and proud co-creators of their detective aliases, Kai and Koa.
In 2025, Phil launched Curiosity Quest, a fun, educational adventure series for kids aged 7 and up. Each booklet combines fun storytelling, time-traveling curiosity, and activities like quizzes and puzzles to spark learning without the yawns.
A fan of cruise ships over airplanes (because pool-side nacho stands, tropical drinks, and midnight buffets), Phil is always down for pizza with friends, random road trips, and the kind of laughs that make your cheeks hurt. His motto? Stay curious, keep exploring, and never stop asking: “What if?” And never underestimate what a retired guy with a laptop can do.
