Trust and Aloha Fading in Hawaii

It is rare that I get truly upset, but today is one of those days, and it moved me to write this “Letter to the Editor,” which I have sent to newspapers across California, Nevada, Hawaii, and the Wall Street Journal.

LETTER TO THE EDITORS

Las Vegas is often called the “Ninth Island,” and many in Nevada and California follow Hawaii’s events closely.  That’s why it was so troubling to see a Maui police officer publicly celebrate the assassination of Charlie Kirk, a popular conservative voice who has encouraged young people to think critically and debate ideas.

Yes, the Maui officer has a First Amendment right to express his opinions. But public servants are expected to uphold trust, fairness, and respect for all members of the community.  When those values are replaced with open hostility and hate, confidence in government erodes.

Hawaii’s reputation for aloha, the warm welcome that has long defined the islands, appears to be fading.  Visitors come not only for the scenery but for the spirit of aloha.  One has to wonder how many vacationers, from the mainland or abroad, will now choose other destinations.  Or perhaps that is the point: to send a message that conservative thinking is no longer welcome in Hawaii.
